Agile Software Development Made Easy!

How do agile schedules fit into larger integrated master schedules?

Hi,

I'm implementing Scrum for a client on a project that is part of an overall, larger effort.  We are using Agilo to build our Release and Sprint Plans, but the client wants us to our Release and Sprint Plans into the overall integrated master schedule.

Have any of you ever done this before?  I'm interested in learning how you integrated the agile schedules into the overall integrated master schedule (recorded in MS Project), and how you managed and depicted the dependencies between the two schedules.

Thanks!
Pat

Pat,

It's difficult to know the right answer to your question without more information about the level of granularity and duration of your "release" schedules.

At IGN our "releases" for major stuff averaged eight weeks. We used two week sprints, so that's four sprints. We liked to reserve the final sprint for stabilization, UAT and release prep. On a quarterly basis we reviewed 12-18 month longer-range plans that were managed using spreadsheets.

I've stopped using MS Project for software development except for making pretty project-granular GANTTs for executives. I never use it for task-level planning. In fact I don't do task-level estimating at all.

We did one BIG release of a product where we planned eleven sprints using story points and velocity up front. We achieved twelve sprints.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mark --- helps a lot.

How did you handle the funding estimates in the 12-18 month planning?

Pat,

This was all for internal development. HC planning was pretty easy. The velocity assumed a certain population of a team. If we wanted to go faster then we knew we had to add more gas (people). That's one of the beauties of agile methods - it's pretty straight forward to know the utility of more people.
